[Movie Review] Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero
Synopsis
Magenta, CEO of Red
Pharmaceuticals, wants to resurrect the Red Ribbon Army, which his
father Commander Red led and was eventually destroyed by Goku. Magenta recruited
Dr. Gero's surviving grandson Dr. Hedo, a superhero-obsessed mad
scientist recently released from prison for grave robbing. Despite his
reservations, Hedo accepts the offer after Magenta convinces him that Capsule
Corp and the Z-Fighters are evil organisations. While Goku
and Vegeta are training under Whis on Beerus' planet alongside Broly,
the world is threatened by the Red Ribbon Army, and the only ones available to
defend the earth are the remaining Z fighters, particularly Gohan, Picollo, and
others.
Will
they be able to repel the Red Ribbon Army's impending attack? Let's

Review
"Dragon
Ball Super: Super Hero" has made extensive use of 3D animation as the
primary medium for story presentation. The animation is very much similar to
that of "Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse"! Although "Dragon
Ball Super: Broly" partially incorporated similar technology, the film
this time has pushed it even further by making it fully animated in 3D! The
action choreography appears more fluid with this animation style, with a
variety of angles in capturing! While some fans may dislike this novel
approach, I believe it is a welcome change, especially for younger fans who
prefer 3D animation!
The
film also brought back a lot of memories for DBZ fans who grew up during
the DBZ era! Since his birth, Gohan has been regarded as one of the
strongest Z fighters. However, following the Cell saga, he was demoted to the
backbench, which is a travesty! Fortunately, this film has brought Son Gohan
back into the spotlight, which will delight old fans! Furthermore, the film
has done Picollo justice by giving him the power boost that he so richly
deserves. The film also shows a different side of Picollo, which is a
lot of fun to watch. Picollo, in reality, acts as a much more caring
surrogate father for Gohan and his family. After seeing this film, many
people will fall back in love with Picollo.
Aside
from that, there's a lot of slapstick humour in this show. I remembered Dragon
Ball having some funny moments in their show, but this movie has a lot of
such humour that surprised me. As a result, the tone of the show is actually
quite lighthearted, even though it becomes more serious in the final act!
However,
the film has flaws of its own. I found the plot to be quite predictable, with
some inconsistency in the pacing. Furthermore, while it's refreshing to see the
animation in a different style, the fight scenes aren't as memorable as those
seen in "Dragon Ball Super: Broly"! There are also fewer
fights in this show than in "Dragon Ball Super: Broly"!
Overall,
it's still a good time for long-time Dragon Ball fans because it
provides a lot of fanservice to old fans by providing flashbacks and
re-illustrating some memorable moments from the originals. In fact, the
audience clapped and cheered for Gohan and Picollo in some scenes! Last but not
least, there is a post-credit scene that will delight fans of Goku and Vegeta's
rivalry! So keep an eye out for the post-credit scene!
