[Explore] “The World Of Tim Burton” @ Pavilion Bukit Jalil
Kuala
Lumpur, March 2023 - I recently had the opportunity to visit the pop-up museum "The
World of Tim Burton" in Pavilion Bukit Jalil. As a fan of Tim
Burton's work, I was eager to see the exhibition that celebrated his
five-decade career and showcased his distinct artistic style, known as "Burtonesque".
The
exhibition was organised into ten thematic sections, each of which featured
paintings, drawings, photographs, videos, and media arts. Burton's early works
were featured in the first section, "Influences" which paid
homage to classic cartoonists and illustrators.
The
following section, "Holidays" highlighted Burton's
upbringing in Burbank, California, as well as his love of the holiday
season, which inspired his work. This theme was evident in his illustrated poem
collection as well as his stop-motion animated musical, "The Nightmare
Before Christmas," which ghoulishly and gleefully linked Halloween and
Christmas.
"Unrealized Project" showcased sketches, storyboards, and maquettes from unproduced Burton projects. Burton's treatment of the seemingly opposing genres of horror and comedy was on display in the "Carnivalesque" section. Burton's imagery combined the grotesque and the comedic with deadpan wordplay humour, from twisting tongues to eyeballs popping out of sockets. The "Figurative Works" section featured Burton's most personal works, such as drawings, paintings, and sculptures unrelated to his professional projects. Burton depicted physical reality not as it appears, but as it is personally felt, by distorting perspective and the human figure.
The
section titled "Misunderstood Outcast" focused on the
archetypical and possibly autobiographical "misunderstood outcast,"
which is the most recognisable theme in Tim Burton's art and films.
For
visitors who are familiar with Tim Burton's films, the "Film
Characters" section provided a deeper look into familiar characters
and worlds. Paintings, videos, script notes, storyboards, puppets, and
maquettes demonstrated how Burton's ideas became film characters.
The "Polaroids"
section featured a number of series of oversized Polaroid prints created by
Burton between 1992 and 1999, using a rare 20 x 24 large-format instant camera.
These personal photographs were inspired by visual themes and motifs in his
professional films.
The
replica of Tim Burton's personal studio, where he works on his current
projects, was one of the exhibition's highlights. Visitors were given an
exclusive sneak peek into the works in progress.
Finally,
"The World of Tim Burton" pop-up museum in Pavilion Bukit
Jalil was an amazing experience for Tim Burton fans. The exhibition celebrated
Burton's five-decade career and showcased his distinct artistic style. Thematic
sections were well-curated and gave visitors a more in-depth understanding of
Burton's world.
