[Technology] MDEC Signs MoU with GSMA at MWC 2023 to Accelerate 5G
Application Development
The GSMA has committed to sharing live use cases from its extensive
network while also promoting investment opportunities in Malaysia's 5G
roll-out.
BARCELONA, SPAIN, 2023 - Malaysia Digital Economy
Corporation (MDEC), the nation's lead digital economy agency under the
Ministry of Communications and Digital (KKD), announced that it has signed
a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Groupe Speciale Mobile Association
(GSMA) to accelerate Malaysia's digital economy growth by spurring
development of 5G applications using use cases.
Ts. Mahadhir Aziz, CEO of MDEC, and Julian
Gorman, Head of APAC, GSMA, signed the MoU.
"This MoU marks an important milestone for us, especially at this
critical juncture with the roll-out of 5G in Malaysia, which is expected to
reach 80 percent coverage by the end of 2024," said YB Fahmi Fadzil,
Minister of Communications and Digital. The use cases based on 5G technology
have enormous potential to drive significant economic growth, improve social
outcomes, and assist Malaysia in meeting its sustainable development goals,
which are aligned with the Malaysia MADANI vision.
"We are confident that this MoU, combined with the GSMA's
extensive network, experience, and know-how, will boost our digital economy's
digital capabilities, capacities, and value."
Smart cities, Industry 4.0, education, healthtech, environmental
monitoring, and social inclusivity are among the sectors that will benefit from
the use cases. The GSMA will also commit to including Malaysia case studies and
contributions in GSMA Intelligence reports such as the APAC Mobile Economy
Report and Digital Societies Report.
Under the terms of the agreement, MDEC and GSMA will also work
together to increase interest in digital investments in the promoted sectors
and tech enablers of Malaysia Digital, a new national strategic initiative. It
will also seek to develop Malaysia's capability and capacity in 5G to stimulate
interest in digital investments.
"GSMA is and will be an important partner for us as we seek to
accelerate the growth of our digital economy," said Ts. Mahadhir Aziz, CEO
of MDEC. With their established credentials as one of the leading authorities
in mobile and digital technology and MDEC's deep expertise in ASEAN's digital
ecosystem, the leverage and opportunities created by this MoU will be
significant."
The MoU will also seek to improve and drive Environmental, Social, and
Governance (ESG) programmes aimed at promoting the inclusivity and
sustainability of Malaysia's digital economy.
The GSMA represents the interests of mobile operators worldwide,
uniting over 750 operators with nearly 400 companies in the broader mobile
ecosystem, including handset and device makers, software companies, equipment
providers, and internet companies, as well as organisations in adjacent
industry sectors.
