DFP PRESENTS ‘THE MUSIC OF STEVIE WONDER’ BY THE MPO JAZZ BAND & FRIENDS
Kuala Lumpur, 2023 – The Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS (DFP) will continue its 25th anniversary celebration with a jazz concert titled "The Music of Stevie Wonder", which will be performed by the MPO Jazz Band & Friends on Saturday, 9th September 2023, at 8.30 p.m.
The Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) jazz ensemble has previously presented many jazz-themed concerts, including the All That Jazz concert (2013) and the MPO Happy Hour series, and collaborated with local and international artists such as Elvira Arul, Atilia, Ruth Sahanaya, Laura Fygi, and Harry Connick Jr. This has strengthened the MPO's reputation as a versatile orchestra to be reckoned with.
The MPO Jazz Band will delight its audience with timeless hits by the famed American singer/songwriter who is regarded as a pioneer and influence by musicians of all genres in this tribute concert to Stevie Wonder. Wonder's critical success peaked in the 1970s, with albums like Superstition and Songs in the Key of Life. He rose to prominence in the 1980s thanks to groundbreaking collaborations with Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney. Wonder is one of the best-selling music artists of all time (over 100 million records sold worldwide), and she has received 25 Grammy Awards and one Academy Award, as well as being inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
Don't You Worry 'Bout A Thing, Send One Your Love, I Wish, Rocket Love, Part Time Lover, Contusion, Golden Lady, and Sir Duke will be performed by the MPO Jazz Band in jazz interpretations.
Marques Young, the MPO's Principal Trombone and a composer, will direct this concert. He graduated from The Juilliard School of Music in New York with a Bachelor of Music degree and has performed with the American Brass Quintet, the Buffalo and New York Philharmonics, the Arkansas and Charleston Symphonies, and the Aspen Festival Orchestra. Duel Citizenship, his debut album, was released in 2016, and he contributed to Bassment Syndicate's 25 hrs and Morning albums.
Young teaches trombone at the Yong Siew Toh Music Conservatory in Singapore as well as the University of Malaysia. He is a proud artist of Thein Brass, Willie's Custom Mouthpieces, and MVQ.
Powerhouse vocalist Aisha Retno and singer/songwriter Syafiq Abdilah will join Young on the DFP stage. Aisha has released several singles since breaking into the local entertainment scene in 2018, and she finished third in the Big Stage 2022 competition. Her first English single, W.H.U.T., received 32 million global streams and earned her a Gold Award. Syafiq, on the other hand, debuted in 2019 with a single that received 500,000 views on YouTube. In 2022, he was a Big Stage finalist and released a single called Kekal. The two young artists will captivate the audience with their fresh jazz musicianship in collaboration with the MPO Jazz Band.
