Kuala Lumpur, 2023 – Tengku Irfan returns to Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS (DFP) on Saturday, 2 September 2023 at 8.30 pm, following his performance with the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) at the Silver Gala Night on 19 August 2023; this time, Irfan will conduct the MPO in a programme of melodious symphonies and dance rhythms with a Finnish touch!
Tengku Irfan, a Malaysian-born composer, pianist, and conductor, follows in the footsteps of notable musicians such as André Previn and Leonard Bernstein. His works have been performed by world-renowned orchestras. The works have received international recognition, including three ASCAP Morton Gould Awards. Since the age of 11, he has performed with orchestras worldwide under the most eminent conductors, and as a conductor, he has been leading orchestras since 2015.
The MPO will begin the concert with Irfan's composition Flamme, Funken, Freude, which was written as a 250th anniversary tribute to Beethoven, whom Irfan regards as "possibly the greatest, most influential composer in the history of music." Funken (sparks) and freude (joy) are taken from Beethoven's memorable Ninth Symphony, while flamme (flame) refers to the composition's overall essence.
The MPO will also perform Bartók's Dance Suite, written in 1923 on commission from Budapest to commemorate the city's Golden Jubilee. When performed by the Budapest Philharmonic, it did more to spread the composer's name abroad than any other work.
The MPO will also perform Sibelius' Lemminkainen's Return, which was inspired by the great Finnish epic legend Kalevala. The music's evocative power and motoric drive follow the Finnish hero furiously riding his proud steed through Finland's vast northern forests before reaching a thrilling conclusion.
The concert will conclude with Schumann's Symphony No. 4 in D minor, a work that is considered a watershed moment in the evolution of classical music. The music, which premiered in Leipzig in 1841, explores the depths of the human soul and features a darkly brooding motivic cell that unifies the entire symphony.
