[Upcoming Concert] A Tribute To Sudirman
THE MPO HONOURS LEGENDARY STAR SUDIRMAN AT DEWAN FILHARMONIK PETRONAS
Kuala Lumpur, 2023 – As part of the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra's (MPO) 25th anniversary celebration, the orchestra will celebrate the music of legendary Sudirman Haji Arshad on Saturday, 16th September 2023 at 8.30 p.m. at Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS (DFP).
On Malaysia Day, it is fitting for the MPO to pay tribute to a Malaysian music icon who is beloved by many. The late Dato Sudirman Haji Arshad won Bintang RTM in 1976, and the rest is history; he went on to become one of the country's most prolific and respected singers. His groundbreaking open-air concert at Chow Kit Road in 1986 drew a 100,000-strong crowd, making it one of Malaysia's most prominent concert events. The Singing Lawyer's crowning achievement came in 1989, when he won the Salem Asia Music Award at the Royal Albert Hall in London.
Sudirman is known for creating music that transcends genres, race, and age; he sang in multiple languages, including Malay, English, Chinese, and Indian, demonstrating his exceptional versatility.
The MPO will capture the essence of Sudirman's legacy in this special concert by presenting a programme of diverse themes and genres. Traditional songs (Joget Kenangan Manis and Apa Khabar Orang Kampung), mesmerising ballads (Merisik Khabar, Pelangi Petang, and Hujan), Broadway (Big Spender and Memories), 'the people's songs' (Punch Card and Basikal Tua), and, in conjunction with Malaysia Day, Warisan and 31 Ogos will be performed. Ahmad Muriz Che Rose will direct the concert.
Liza Aziz (who was a background singer for Sudirman), Hazama, Ernie Zakri, and Arish Mikael will perform at the concert. Their artistry, combined with the MPO's musicianship, will undoubtedly provide an unforgettable concert experience for the audience.
