[Borneo Anime Event Coverage] Borneo Matsuri @ Sabah International Convention Centre
Kota Kinabalu, 2023 - The lively city of Kota Kinabalu recently played host to an event that has undoubtedly etched a remarkable imprint in the hearts of Anime, Cosplay, and Gaming (ACG) enthusiasts across Borneo. For the very first time, the Borneo Matsuri, an ACG Music Festival, was held at the esteemed Sabah International Convention Centre on the 21st and 22nd of October 2023. This event not only marked a milestone as Borneo's inaugural ACG Music Festival but also showcased the burgeoning ACG culture in this part of the world.
Borneo Matsuri: Borneo's First ACG Music Festival
Date: 21st and 22nd October 2023
Venue: Sabah International Convention Centre, Kota Kinabalu
The festival saw a fantastic lineup of over 20 artists and cosplayers, including Rina Hime, Arddley Nicholas, Gretchene, Eu4nics, Ordin J, Tuni Sundatang, Whooguan, Zen Oasis, Iccachu, Naomi Yuma, Nakoudays, Zorokit, Amelia Khor, Ai Nurul and Pudds. The attendees were given the chance to interact with their favorite artists and cosplayers—be it through autographs or photo sessions. The event provided a platform for fans to connect with the individuals who embody the ACG culture they so admire.
The creative essence of the ACG community was vividly displayed through the cosplay competitions, where the creativity and dedication of participants shone brightly. Furthermore, the gaming arena was abuzz with competitions like the MLBB Gaming Tournament and Street Fighter VI competition, ensuring a vibrant and competitive atmosphere throughout.
As I meandered through the venue, the array of booths was a sight to behold. From shopping for exclusive merchandise, exploring exquisite fan art to engaging in affordable gacha games for a chance to win figurines, the Borneo Matsuri had something for everyone. The variety of food stalls ensured that the attendees were energized and ready to dive back into the festivities.
The event was a monumental success, paving the way for what could potentially become a yearly celebration of ACG culture in Borneo. The impeccable organization by Kupikupifm Sabah, in collaboration with Projek Hikayat and HOBBYCON, was a testament to the passion and dedication of the individuals working tirelessly behind the scenes to promote ACG culture in Borneo.
One of my personal favourite was the electric performance by Rina Hime, which was nothing short of dynamic, brimming with an energy that resonated through the crowd. Meeting Amelia Khor in person and having a photo taken with her at the Predator Booth was another good memory for me at Borneo Matsuri. Being able to meet some other cosplayers and familiar faces also made my weekend a good one.
Being a medical specialist by profession, and an ardent ACG fan, it was an honor to be part of this event. As the chief editor of wljack.com, I, Jack, am committed to continually covering and sharing insights on the ACG events unfolding in Borneo, as they are not only entertaining but instrumental in fostering a thriving ACG community here. The Borneo Matsuri was more than just a festival; it was a celebration of a shared passion, and I am already looking forward to what the next event holds for us.
