[Borneo Event Coverage] “KITA - Sabah Celebrating Diversity” screening @ Ocean Cinema, Keningau
Keningau, 2023 – On the 14th of September 2023, Ocean Cinema in Keningau held the special screening of “KITA - Sabah Celebrating Diversity” , a documentary film produced by The Sabah Unity in Diversity Community Partners (SUIDCP). As a medical specialist stationed in Keningau, it was an honor for me, Jack, the chief editor of wljack.com, to cover this extraordinary event. It was not just a movie screening; it was a celebration of Sabah's rich cultural tapestry and the strength of unity that binds its people together.
“KITA - Sabah Celebrating Diversity” is a documentary that encapsulates the heart and soul of Sabah's diverse society. This one-hour 45-minute film is a testament to the commitment and passion of the local crew who dedicated nearly two years to its production. In collaboration with SUIDCP and funded by FINAS, the film takes viewers on a journey through the realities, values, and aspirations of Sabahans as they embrace, celebrate, and preserve their cultural diversity.
The documentary is divided into three interrelated sections, each weaving together the real-life stories of 10 ordinary Sabahans. Through their unique perspectives, we experience the "strength," "beauty," and "deliciousness" of Sabah's diverse society. From the lush landscapes of Sabah to the bustling streets of Kuala Lumpur, the film captures the essence of this beautiful state.
One of my personal favorite moments in the documentary was the part about the chefs traveling across Sabah in search of local ingredients to create unique and tantalizing dishes. It showcased not only the culinary diversity of Sabah but also the passion and creativity of its people.
What makes “KITA - Sabah Celebrating Diversity” even more remarkable is the involvement of the Sabah Unity in Diversity Community Partners (SUIDCP). This non-profit and non-partisan collaborative network of local faith and community-based organizations works tirelessly to promote unity in diversity. SUIDCP's objectives include preserving, promoting, and celebrating Sabah's unity and rich religious and cultural diversity. Their dedication to this cause is truly inspiring.
The special screening at Ocean Cinema Keningau drew an audience of 180 guests from Keningau and nearby areas. Among the attendees was Quen Pang, one of the characters featured in the documentary, and her mother. Their presence added a personal touch to the event, emphasizing the real-life connections and stories that “KITA - Sabah Celebrating Diversity” explores.
As a writer and editor, covering events like the “KITA - Sabah Celebrating Diversity” screening is a privilege. It allows us to shine a spotlight on the unique culture and talents that Borneo has to offer. These events not only bring joy to the community but also serve as a reminder of the importance of preserving and celebrating cultural diversity.
In conclusion, "KITA - Sabah Celebrating Diversity" is more than just a documentary; it is a heartfelt tribute to the unity and diversity that define Sabah. It serves as a reminder that in a world filled with differences, it is our shared values and aspirations that bind us together. Sabahans can take pride in their rich cultural heritage, and "KITA" beautifully showcases the strength, beauty, and deliciousness of their diverse society. This is a film that will leave you inspired and proud to be a part of this remarkable community.
