[Upcoming Concert Event] Kian Soltani: Schumann Cello Concerto
Cello virtuoso KIAN SOLTANI makes his debut with the MPO at Dewan Filharmonik Petronas!
Kuala Lumpur, 2024 - The Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) will perform classical masterpieces at a concert on Saturday, 20th April 2024, at 8.30 pm at Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS (DFP), KLCC.
Conductor Junichi Hirokami returns to the DFP podium to lead the MPO in a program that includes Schumann's Cello Concerto in A minor, which contains the composer's signature soaring romanticism, passionate utterances, and poetic beauty. Schumann never heard the work in its entirety; it was first performed posthumously in Leipzig in 1860 (four years after his death), at a concert commemorating his 50th birthday. Over the centuries, this work has become one of the most popular concertos of all time.
The MPO will perform this concerto in collaboration with Austrian virtuoso Kian Soltani, hailed by The Times as a "remarkable cellist" and described by Gramophone magazine as "sheer perfection". His playing is distinguished by a richness of expression, sense of individuality, and technical mastery. He has won several awards, including the International Paulo Cello Competition in Helsinki in 2013 and the coveted Opus Klassic Awards, Germany's most prestigious classical music prize, in 2022. He has previously performed with the NHK Symphony Orchestra, Wiener Symphoniker, Camerata Salzburg, and the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra.
The program will conclude with Bruckner's Symphony No.6, a work of soaring grandeur and powerful climaxes. Its first complete performance took place in Vienna in 1901. Bruckner's first movement is a magnificent tapestry of irresistible musical logic, while the second movement features gorgeous coloured harmony with playful character and light scoring. The work concludes with the final movement, which blazes forth with confidence.
