[Coverage] "Drifting Flowers, Flowing Days" @ MIFFest 2024

The 7th Malaysia International Film Festival (MIFFest) showcased an evocative blend of international cinema, "Drifting Flowers, Flowing Days" was one of the movies screened. This Japanese indie film, directed by the talented Yutaka Tsunemachi, resonated deeply with audiences, marking a significant milestone in its journey from niche screenings in Japan to the global stage.

"Drifting Flowers, Flowing Days" offers an intimate and deeply human portrayal of the struggles faced by young adults in modern-day Tokyo. The film centers around three distinct characters—Hiroto, Futaba, and Daigo—who each wrestle with personal and professional challenges while working in vastly different environments: a construction site, a flower shop, and a design studio. As they navigate the complexities of their daily lives, they begin to question their choices, dreams, and the futures that lie ahead.

Tsunemachi’s storytelling is layered with subtlety, capturing the essence of youth in a society where tradition and modernity often clash. The narrative is a delicate balance of the characters' internal conflicts and the external pressures they face, making it a relatable experience for viewers across different cultures.

The Q&A session that followed the screening provided a rare glimpse into Tsunemachi's creative process. The director shared insights into how he allowed the narrative to unfold naturally, guided by his passion and intuition.

"I followed the emotions and instincts of the characters, letting their stories shape the film organically." This approach extended to his editing style, which Tsunemachi described as “following the flow.” His intent was to create a cinematic experience that mirrored the characters' emotional journeys, using the rhythm of the scenes to evoke a sense of connection with the audience.

MIFFest's inclusion of Tsunemachi's debut feature in its 2024 lineup underscores the festival’s commitment to promoting fresh voices and innovative storytelling in cinema.
