Hong Kong Filmmaker Derek Tsang Shares Global Insights at KL Masterclass

Kuala Lumpur, 2024 - Acclaimed Hong Kong director Derek Tsang recently took center stage at GSC Cinema, MyTown, Kuala Lumpur, to share his wealth of experience in the global film industry. 

The masterclass drew a packed house eager to glean wisdom from the man behind the award winning "Better Days". Tsang kicked off the session by tracing his cinematic roots, crediting Wong Kar Wai as a major inspiration from his youth. He then shared the story of his humble beginnings, revealing how his father, veteran actor Eric Tsang, helped him secure an internship with renowned director Peter Chan Ho-sun. 

But it wasn't all smooth sailing for the younger Tsang. "I started from the bottom, literally making coffee and photocopies," he chuckled, emphasizing the importance of staying grounded in the glitzy world of showbiz. Tsang also discussed his experiences in Mainland China whereby the regulations to film there is strict. Tsang's also made comparison of filmmaking in China and the U.S. He advised that one important thing to be done for those who wish to film in U.S., is to find a good agent that is trustable.

In his opinion, making films in unique ways is similar to playing games with different rules. There is no absolute freedom to create your masterpiece, but once you discover the rules, it may be useful and you will enjoy making films.

Tsang opened up about the constant tug-of-war between commercial appeal and artistic integrity. Last but not least, Tsang also dropped a tantalizing hint about his future plans. "I've heard great things about Malaysia's potential for filmmaking," He revelaed that he’s exploring the potential locations in Malaysia that would be suitable for his future filming.

The masterclass, which ran for a riveting almost two hours, left the audience inspired

在他看来，拍电影就像是在不同规则下玩游戏。虽然没有绝对的自由去创作自己的作品，但一旦你了解了规则，这些规则可能会对你有所帮助，你也会享受制作电影的过程。

最后，他还透露了自己未来的计划，吊足了观众的胃口。“我听说马来西亚在电影制作方面潜力巨大，”他表示自己正在探索马来西亚适合未来拍摄的潜在地点。

这场长达近两个小时的大师班内容丰富，引人入胜，让在场观众深受启发。
