Kay Tse Stars in "Out of the Shadow" with Heartfelt Humor
The event kicked off with the screening of "Out of the Shadow," directed by Ricky Ko, starring Kay Tse as Tao Kuen Ying, a retired undercover cop. The film tells the story of Tao’s quiet life in Tai O with her daughter Chu Po (played by Larine Tang), who becomes entangled with a dangerous drug ring. The film masterfully blends action and comedy, showcasing the heartwarming yet humorous bond between mother and daughter as they fight for justice together.
On stage, Kay Tse expressed her joy at playing this role, noting the coincidental connection between her movie and her song "Wonder Woman’s Retirement Life." She shared how much she missed Malaysia, having last visited about 7 or 8 years ago. She also joked about her husband Louis Cheung’s recent filming experience in Malaysia, where he was on a strict diet and could only watch her enjoy meals over FaceTime. Kay expressed hope that she could also film in Malaysia, appreciating its lush landscapes.
Ling Man Lung and Directors Excited About Malaysian Collaborations
Making his first visit to Malaysia, actor Ling Man Lung was eager to experience local cuisine and voiced his desire to work with Malaysian filmmakers. “Whether it’s for drama or film, I’m in—as long as I can enjoy Malaysian food every day!” he joked. He also introduced his role in "The Remnant," humorously sharing that it was his first time playing a villain on the big screen.
Directors Kwan Man Hin and Dickson Leung were equally excited about their visit, particularly their fondness for durians, which they initially thought could be picked from trees. Both expressed interest in future projects in Malaysia, with Leung hinting at the idea of making a supernatural or horror film in the country. Kwan also praised the enthusiasm of local film students and was optimistic about collaborating with the Malaysian film industry.
A Fan Confession and Kay Tse’s Reflections
During a post-screening session for "Out of the Shadow," Kay Tse shared insights into her preparation for the role, including her karate training. She reflected on her transition from singing to acting, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to play leading roles in female-centric stories, a rarity in Hong Kong cinema. She also credited her husband Louis Cheung as her “personal acting coach,” praising his advice on how to thoroughly immerse herself in her roles.
In a lighthearted moment, a fan confessed his admiration for Kay during the session, leading to a playful exchange where she joked about drawing a fever-reducing charm for his girlfriend, who had attended despite being ill. The humorous moment had the audience laughing, and Kay promised her Malaysian fans that she would visit more often.
This event showcases 7 Hong Kong films. Besides the opening film “Out Of The Shadow”, the other titles include Chow Kam Wing’s "For Alice", Ho Miu Ki's "Love Lies", Andy Lo’s "Once in a Blue Moon", Sunny Lau's "One Night at School", Kwan Man Hin's "The Remnant" and Dickson Leung's "YUM Investigation".
Simultaneously, an exhibition titled "From Idea To Icon: Crafting the Hong Kong Cinema" is held and adopts a new concept to present the filmmaking process, unveiling important steps from script creation to post-production and shares with the public how filmmakers invest their heart and soul into making a good film. Featured in the exhibition are: a giant script installation art of "Love Lies", showcasing Ho Miu Ki's screenwriting talent; edited action scene clips from "Out of the Shadow", reflecting the power of film editing; the set and props of a laundromat scene from "The Remnant", highlighting the charm of production design; and storyboard scripts and special effects comparison clips from "YUM Investigation”, demonstrating the process of imagination realization in post-production. The exhibition is opened for public viewing with free admission from 21 September to 3 October 2024 at GSC The Starling Mall.
