[Media Interview] Zoe Tay 郑惠玉, Shaun Chen 陈泓宇, and Zhang Zhe Tong 张哲通 《喜乐乐SHARE丰年》
The Little Nyonya II: Emerald Hill
The highly anticipated sequel to The Little Nyonya, The Little Nyonya II: Emerald Hill, is set to premiere on Astro AEC this March. Following the immense popularity of the original series in 2008, lead actors Zoe Tay, Shaun Chen, and Zhang Zhe Tong visited Malaysia to attend Astro’s ‘SHARE The Joy’ fan meeting, where they engaged with fans and discussed the upcoming drama.
No Pressure on Ratings – Just Delivering Their Best
Despite the previous season’s success, the cast expressed that they do not feel pressured regarding the sequel’s viewership ratings. Zoe Tay stated, “We are grateful that the first series sparked interest in Nyonya culture, but this sequel presents a fresh storyline, and we hope it will resonate with audiences in a new way.”
Shaun Chen echoed her sentiment, emphasizing that each cast member was carefully selected through multiple auditions and has put great effort into their respective roles. Zhang Zhe Tong, who plays ‘Huang Zu Ye,’ the adopted son of ‘Yue Niang’ (Jeanette Aw’s character in the previous season), revealed that he rewatched The Little Nyonya to better understand his character’s background.
Diving Deeper into Nyonya Culture & Culinary Experiences
The cast shared how filming the drama helped them gain deeper insight into Nyonya culture. Zoe Tay admitted that, before working on The Little Nyonya, she often confused Peranakan culture with Malay traditions. The show, however, provided her with a better understanding.
Most of the filming took place in Malaysia, specifically in Malacca and Johor, where the cast got the opportunity to experience authentic Nyonya cuisine, such as glutinous rice and Ayam Pongteh. Zhang Zhe Tong recalled an amusing incident where he had to eat an entire Nyonya dumpling in one take, leading to multiple retakes due to its sheer size.
A Story Focused on Emerald Hill with Unique New Characters
Unlike the original The Little Nyonya, which focused on the legacy of its titular character, the sequel shifts its narrative to the ‘Emerald Hill’ family, introducing several new independent characters. Zoe Tay plays the matriarch of the Zhang family, a woman with great responsibility who also battles depression due to past incidents.
The drama also highlights the relationships between the male characters and their wives, bringing a new layer of storytelling and fresh dynamics. Shaun Chen expressed his excitement about this aspect, stating, “The interactions in the series are quite compelling, and audiences will get to see various facets of Nyonya traditions.”
Seamless Collaboration with Taiwanese Actor Xiu Jie Kai
Taiwanese actor Xiu Jie Kai joins the cast as Shaun Chen’s on-screen brother. Addressing the cross-regional collaboration, Shaun praised Hsiu’s professionalism and adaptability. “Despite coming from a different cultural background, he integrated seamlessly into the production, making our interactions feel natural and intense on screen,” he shared.
Zhang Zhe Tong also noted that the chemistry between the Singaporean and Taiwanese actors was smooth, with no language or cultural barriers. “We got along well and had many powerful scenes together,” he added.
Shaun Chen Invests in CNY Film Money Game
In addition to The Little Nyonya II: Emerald Hill, Shaun Chen has also invested in the upcoming Chinese New Year film Money Game, which features Hong Kong veteran actor Eric Tsang. The film is set to be released on 29th January 2025. When asked why he did not act in the film, he humorously explained, “There were already too many characters, and no role suited me.”
Chinese New Year Plans
With the Lunar New Year approaching, Shaun and Zhang Zhe Tong both shared their plans to return to Malaysia to celebrate with their families. Zhang revealed, “Usually, I would go back to Penang to visit my grandmother, but this year, my family is coming to Johor to see me instead.” Meanwhile, Zoe Tay will be busy with countdown and Chap Goh Mei television recordings.
Astro’s ‘SHARE The Joy’ fan meeting allowed fans to connect with the cast and build excitement for The Little Nyonya II: Emerald Hill. The drama, filled with sincerity and attention to detail, is set to bring another wave of appreciation for Nyonya culture when it premieres in March 2025 on Astro AEC. Stay tuned!
